Let's Go: "The Surpassing Worth of Christ"
Main Idea: Not everyone will value Christ, but that shouldn’t change how we show sacrificial love for Him
I. Hatred opposes His Value (Mark 14:1-2)
Mark 14:1-2 – “It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Matthew 26:1-5 “When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.””
Luke 22:1-2 – “Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.”
John 1:5 – “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
II. Betrayal disregards His Value (Mark 14:10—11)
Mark 14:10-11 – “Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.”
Matthew 26:14-16 “Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.”
Luke 22:3-6 “Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.”
Hebrews 10:23 – “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
III. The Surpassing Worth of Christ (Mark 14:3-9)
Matthew 26:6-13; John 12:1-8
1. He is worth it! (Mark 14:3)
2. Not everyone will understand His worth. (Mark 14:4-5)
John 12:4-5 – “But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, ‘Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?’”
3. Not everyone will understand your actions. (Mark 14:6-7)
4. Your value of Christ will be remembered. (Mark 14:8-9)
